I think I see what you're describing.  It feels like the timeline for the pattern is moving at an awkwardly fast pace, which may be part of what is making the pattern look and/or feel like it is not smoothly flowing from fast to slow.  It also has the side effect of making me subconsciously try to make my hills and valleys far too rapid to compensate.  The increased speed of the pattern-grid's scrolling has been around for a while though.  I'd rather go back to a more casual scroll speed, personally.
