It worked fine in my old android phone.  With my new S21, apparently Samsung has some aggressive battery saving schemes

If you have the toy connected, the phone screen goes off, so does the app remote control.  So you need the app open all the time , and not go to sleep, if you want to use the long distance remote option

Is there any known way to fix this (to get remote control working even when phone sleeps)
