No it doesn't, it also didn't used to stop them seeing profile picture changes after you removed them. I can't say if this has changed with recent updates. I would suggest blocking rather than removing if this is a concern. 

I believe they would still be listed but they would get a warning saying you are no longer friends with that person and to add them back to continue chatting.
